The flag of Vatican City was adopted in 1929, the year of the Lateran Treaty with Italy, creating an independent state governed by the Holy See. The flag consists of two vertical bands (gold and white) with the crossed keys of Saint Peter and the Papal Tiara. The two keys which represent the keys to Heaven (According to the Gospel of Matthew 16:19) given by Jesus Christ to St. Peter.
The popes throughout the centuries are the successors of Peter. The gold key represents "spiritual power" while the silver key represents "worldly power." The red cord connecting the two keys is the symbol of the union of spiritual and worldly values.

La bandera consta de dos franjas verticales (oro y negro) con las llaves cruzadas de San Pedro y la tiara papal.
