There are many ways to serve the Church and make the world a better place. Saints (and siblings) Benedict and Scholastica were born in the 5th century in Nursia, Italy. They founded monasteries and convents where people of faith could dedicate their lives in community to serve God and others. Their motto was Ora et Labora, which is Latin “pray and work.” Saint Benedict wrote the Rule, a set of guidelines to help his community live as witness of the Gospel.
One of his principles is to be hospitable and welcome others as brothers and sisters. No matter who they are. There are still many active Benedictine communities throughout the world. They continue to serve others, praying and working in community and giving witness to their faith. Saint Benedict’s feast is July 11th, and Saint Scholastica’s feast is February 10th.
Hay muchas maneras de servir a la iglesia y hacer del mundo un mejor lugar. Los santos (y hermanos) Benito y Escolástica nacieron en el siglo V en Nursia, Italia. Fundaron monasterios y conventos donde las personas de fe pudieran dedicar su vida en comunidad a Servir a Dios y a los demás. Su lema era Ora et Labora, en Latín y quiere decir “Ora y Trabaja.” San Benito escribió la Regla, un conjunto de normas para ayudar a su comunidad a servir como testigos del Evangelio.
Una de esas normas es ser hospitalario y acoger a los demás como hermanos y hermanas sin importar quienes sean. Todavía existen muchas comunidades Benedictinas activas en todo el mundo. Estas continúan sirviendo a los demás orando y trabajando en comunidad siendo testigos de su fe. La fiesta de San Benito es el 11 de Julio y la fiesta de Santa Escolástica es el 10 de Febrero.
