Blessed Junipero Serra
will be canonized by Pope Francis on September 23 in Washington D.C. when our
Holy Father visits the United States. The Following is a reflection by Archbishop
Gomez:
“Father Serra will be the
first American saint to be canonized on American soil. And of course, he is
being canonized by the first Hispanic pope- the first to speak the Spanish
language as his native tongue, and a pope who himself is an immigrant’s son.
The rich symbolism of his
canonization matches a time of deep uncertainty and social change in the United
States. Right now, as we know, American Society is caught up in a divisive
political cultural debate over immigration and the future historic identity as
a multicultural nation of immigrants.
This canonization also
comes at a time when American society and culture are being aggressively
secularized and “de-Christianized.” This process -- being carried out by
governing and cultural elites -- raises grave questions about America’s
national identity and its historic commitment to freedom of conscience,
religious liberty and to a civil society that respects the rights of believers
and religious institutions to help shape the common good.
Against the backdrop of
these profound changes and challenges in American life, Father Serra’s
canonization is providential. I believe it is a prophetic response to the signs
of the times. Father Serra’s canonization in the nation’s capital will bring
graces and blessings. But it should also send a message. His canonization
should sound a call for America to return to its deep religious and
intellectual roots -- as a nation born from the universal mission of the
Catholic Church and the encounter of the Gospel with the first nations,
cultures and peoples found in this land.
His canonization should
also embolden the Church with a new zeal to continue her mission in our time --
the continental mission of the new world of faith and building a new city of
truth and love, mercy and justice.”
Beato Junípero Serra será canonizado por el Papa Francisco el 23 de
Septiembre en Washington, D.C. cuando el Santo Padre visite los Estados Unidos.

“El padre Serra será el primer santo de Estados Unidos será canonizado
en tierra estadounidense. Y, por supuesto, el será canonizado por el primer
Papa hispano, el primero que tiene el idioma español como lengua materna, y un
Papa que es, el mismo, hijo, de un inmigrante.
El rico simbolismo de su canonización coincide con un momento de
profunda incertidumbre y cambio social en los Estados Unidos. Actualmente, como
sabemos, la sociedad estadounidense está atrapada en medio de un divisivo
debate político y cultural sobre la inmigración y el futuro de su identidad
histórica como una nación multicultural de inmigrantes.
Esta canonización llega también en un momento en el que la sociedad y la
cultura estadounidenses están siendo agresivamente secularizadas y “descristianizadas”.
Este proceso --llevado a cabo por las
elites culturales y de gobierno -- plantea serias preguntas acerca de la
identidad nacional de Estados Unidos y de su compromiso histórico con la
libertad de conciencia, con la libertad religiosa y con una sociedad civil que
respete los derechos de los creyentes y de las instituciones religiosas, para
ayudar a moldear el bien común.
El contexto de estos profundos cambios y retos de la vida
estadounidense, la canonización del Padre Serra es providencial. Creo que es
una respuesta profética a los signos de los tiempos. La canonización del Padre
Serra en la capital del país traerá gracias y bendiciones. Pero, también
debería de comunicarnos un mensaje. Su canonización debería hacer resonar un
llamado a los Estados Unidos a regresar
a sus profundas raíces religiosas e interculturales, como una nación nacida de
la misión universal de la Iglesia Católica y del encuentro que tuvieron con el
Evangelio las primeras naciones, culturas y pueblos que se encontraban en estas
tierras.
Su canonización debe también inflamar a la Iglesia con un nuevo celo por
continuar su misión en nuestro tiempo: la misión continental de la nueva
evangelización, que implica la creación de un nuevo mundo de fe y la
construcción de una nueva ciudad, basada en la verdad y el amor, en la
misericordia y en la justicia.”
